Josh Stein
VP, Assistant General Manager
Josh Stein enters his ninth season as assistant general manager after being promoted to the post in December 2013. Stein’s primary responsibility is assisting president of baseball operations & general manager A.J. Preller in all areas of baseball operations, including player evaluation, player development, contract negotiations and Major League roster management. He also oversees the Padres’ Baseball R&D, Baseball Systems and Sports Science initiatives.
2022 marks Stein’s 20th season with the Padres. He first joined the club as a baseball operations intern in the summer of 2003 under General Manager Kevin Towers. He interned through the 2005 season and was named Major League advance scouting coordinator in 2006 working closely with Bruce Bochy, Bud Black and their respective coaching staffs. Following the 2009 season, Stein was named director of baseball operations.
A 2000 graduate of the UC Berkeley with a degree in psychology, Stein continued his academic studies, earning a law degree from the UC Hastings College of Law in 2005. Between college and law school, Stein worked in the tech industry in San Francisco and then traveled and taught English in South America.
Stein and his wife, Laura, reside in San Diego with their daughters, Emma and Jessie.
