Injuries & Moves: Next step for Musgrove

July 14th, 2024

LATEST NEWS

July 12: 2B (left shoulder fracture) activated from IL; LHP (left adductor strain) placed on 15-day IL; RHP recalled from Triple-A El Paso; C optioned to El Paso
Bogaerts was sidelined for nearly two months after he sustained a fracture in a bone in his left shoulder while diving to stop a ground ball against Atlanta. Fitting then, that Bogaerts would make his return for the Padres' series opener against the Braves at Petco Park on Friday night.

"I feel good, man," Bogaerts said. "Let's see how it goes."

Of course, Bogaerts' return creates a ripple effect in the Padres' infield. He started at second base on Friday, moving Jake Cronenworth from second to first and Luis Arraez to DH. Donovan Solano was back in his bench role.

10-DAY/15-DAY INJURED LIST

LHP (left adductor strain)
Expected return: August
Peralta sustained the injury while delivering a pitch in the Padres' game against the Mariners on July 9. He winced in pain and promptly exited the game alongside an athletic trainer. Three days later, he was placed on the IL. Manager Mike Shildt offered no timetable for Peralta's return, noting only that, "It's going to require some time away to heal and some rest." Peralta has posted a 4.50 ERA across 41 outings in the first half. (Last updated: July 12)

OF (right femoral stress reaction)
Expected return:
August or September
Tatis spent most of the first half playing through tightness in his right quad area -- and imaging later revealed a stress reaction in his femur. The injury didn't impact him much at the plate, but it clearly affected his running. The Padres did not offer a timetable for Tatis' potential return, though Tatis said he expects to be out through the All-Star break and possibly much longer, as he's currently shut down from baseball activity. On July 5, manager Mike Shildt noted that Tatis has been able to move around without any discomfort, calling it "signs of healing." (Last updated: July 5)

LHP (left elbow inflammation)
Expected return: Second half
Cosgrove was roughed up for four runs over one-third of an inning in the Padres' win over the Nationals on June 26, and it was later revealed that he was pitching through an elbow issue. Manager Mike Shildt did not offer specifics on a return timetable for Cosgrove, who will be shut down from throwing indefinitely. An integral member of the Padres' bullpen in 2023, Cosgrove has allowed 19 earned runs in 14 2/3 innings this season -- after allowing just 10 earned runs across 51 1/3 frames a year ago. 60-DAY INJURED LIST

RHP (right elbow inflammation)
Expected return: August
Musgrove's first bullpen session has been set for July 17, the third day of the All-Star Break. He will then travel with the team on its three-city road trip, with the plan to continue throwing bullpen sessions, increasing in intensity. Musgrove threw off a bullpen mound on July 10 for the first time, but it wasn't a bullpen session, per se -- just a round of catch with the slope of the mound introduced. He has been playing catch since late June. Musgrove was placed on the IL in early June with elbow inflammation and soreness in his right triceps. An MRI revealed a bone spur that Musgrove said has been causing the inflammation and discomfort. He received a PRP injection in addition to a prior cortisone shot. (Last updated: July 14)

RHP (right elbow inflammation)
Expected return: 2025
Patiño underwent Tommy John surgery on April 30, putting an end to his 2024 season before it began. The 24-year-old made two appearances in Spring Training before opening the season on the IL. The Padres, who originally signed Patiño as an amateur free agent before dealing him to Tampa Bay in the 2020 Blake Snell trade, claimed Patiño off waivers from the White Sox in December.
