The Padres selected a pair of legacies Wednesday on the final day of the MLB Draft -- first Dave Roberts' son Cole, then Dylan Hoffman, nephew to Hall of Famer Trevor Hoffman and son to Padres third-base coach Glenn Hoffman.

San Diego drafted Hoffman, a left-handed pitcher out of Waldorf College, in the 39th round with the 1,163rd overall pick.

Trevor Hoffman, of course, pitched 16 of his 18 big league seasons for the Padres. He collected 552 of his 601 saves with San Diego, was a six-time All-Star there and helped lead the Padres to the 1998 National League pennant.

Dylan's father has plenty of baseball wisdom, too. Glenn played nine seasons with the Red Sox, Dodgers and Angels and also managed the last 88 games of the Dodgers' 1998 season. Dylan's grandfather, Ed, was a longtime usher at Angel Stadium and often performed the national anthem before Angels games.

The round before drafting Hoffman, the Padres took Roberts, a shortstop out of California's Santa Fe Christian School, in the 38th round with the 1,133rd overall pick.

Dave Roberts, now the Dodgers' manager, played for the Padres from 2005-06, then coached for them from 2011-15. He even got a brief bit of managerial experience with San Diego, filling in for one game during the '15 season, before the Dodgers hired him as their skipper for the next season.

The Padres' selection of Cole comes two years after the Dodgers made a similar gesture in 2017 -- they drafted Logan White Jr., son of the Padres executive and former Dodgers scouting director.
