Clevinger's win nets gift from ... Tony Hawk!?!
SAN DIEGO -- Mike Clevinger won his first game as a Padre on Tuesday night, pushing his new team ever closer to ending its 14-year postseason drought. A day later, he received quite the reward for his efforts.
In the Padres’ dugout prior to Wednesday’s game, Clevinger opened a bag with a gift from skateboarding icon and noted Padres fan Tony Hawk: a brand new skateboard.
"Oh my gosh, dude, this is like Christmas," said a giddy Clevinger.
It’s not the first time the two have interacted since Clevinger was dealt from Cleveland to San Diego last week. Hawk posted a photo on Twitter of him skateboarding while wearing a home pinstriped Clevinger jersey. He added this caption:
"Hey Sunshine @MikeClevinger, welcome to San [aka Slam] Diego! Good luck on your next @Padres start, and hit me up if you want me to show you the best skate spots in our town... during offseason, of course."
Clevinger responded promptly, asking Hawk for a "victory skate session after the World Series!"
That interaction spurred Hawk to send Clevinger the board as a gift to honor his first Padres victory. The right-hander pitched five innings of four-run ball against the Rockies on Tuesday, and he was sharp after surrendering a three-run first-inning homer to Nolan Arenado.
"That's so awesome," Clevinger remarked upon receiving the skateboard. "Glad he didn't sign it. Now I can use it."
