Brdar departs, Padres could look internally for hitting coach
SAN DIEGO -- Another offseason, another hitting coach in San Diego.
The Tigers announced the hiring of hitting coach Michael Brdar on Tuesday after he had spent just one season in the same capacity with the Padres. San Diego allowed Brdar to interview with Detroit, where he'll be closer to home and has strong ties to general manager Scott Harris.
That leaves the Padres in need of what will be their eighth hitting coach since 2014. Though this time, they might not have to look very far.
Ryan Flaherty will remain heavily involved in the team's hitting process, and he is likely to be named hitting coach, sources said, though the team is still mulling titles and whether to look at external candidates. Flaherty, who is very highly regarded within the organization, spent last season as quality control coach and even took over as manager when Bob Melvin and bench coach Ryan Christenson missed time due to COVID-19.
In the meantime, hitting instructor Morgan Burkhart will continue to serve as part of the collective group on staff whose role is to coach hitting. Following Brdar’s departure, it’s likely the Padres will add another staffer alongside Flaherty and Burkhart, though it’s unclear whether that hire would come internally or externally -- or what title that staffer would receive.
The Padres don’t foresee any other shakeups on their coaching staff, sources said. The majority -- if not the entirety -- of the rest of the staff is expected to return in their same capacities next season.
The Padres hired Brdar prior to the 2022 campaign after he’d spent two years as hitting coordinator in the Giants organization. In his lone season with San Diego, the team combined to post a .241/.318/.382 slash line with a 102 wRC+ -- slightly above the league average.
