SAN DIEGO -- For the second time in three games, Padres first baseman Eric Hosmer was scratched shortly before first pitch as he battles a gastrointestinal issue that is not COVID-related, the team said.

The Padres expect Hosmer to travel with the club on its forthcoming road trip to San Francisco, but it’s unclear whether he will be available for Tuesday’s series opener.

Hosmer was also a late scratch for the team's win over Arizona on Saturday night. But the Padres first baseman suited up on Sunday and hit his first home run of the year, bringing his early-season RBI total to seven.

“He was dealing with it yesterday but was able to get some fluids down and was able to post and play -- and obviously play well,” said Padres manager Jayce Tingler. “Today, we were hoping for the same, it just never turned for the better.”

Wil Myers, who was slated to receive a day off Monday, was inserted into the lineup at first base in the No. 6 spot in the Padres' 6-2 victory. Second baseman Jurickson Profar, who was hitting sixth, moved up into Hosmer's No. 5 spot in the batting order.

Hosmer is off to a torrid start to the 2020 season. In eight plate appearances, he's reached base six times with three extra-base hits.

But even in his absence, the Padres have a variety of options at first base, including Myers, Josh Naylor and Ty France.

Padres make preparations for first road trip
The Padres are taking every precaution as they embark on their first road trip amid the coronavirus pandemic. It’ll be a road trip unlike any in team history, with players isolating at the team hotel when they aren’t at the ballpark.

“We’re staying in,” Tingler said. “We’re not out, period, and we’re not hanging out with anyone that’s not one of us. … I hope everyone understands how serious we take this.”

Tingler noted that the team holds daily discussions about protocols, and that was no different on Monday. After games were postponed in Miami and Philadelphia due to COVID-19 concerns, the coaching staff reiterated the importance of following those guidelines.

“This is real serious,” said Fernando Tatis Jr. “We just have to keep following the protocols that MLB and the training staff has put out for us.”

Added Tingler: “Doing those things guarantees us nothing; it just gives us a better percentage to stay healthy and safe.”

Worth noting
• Tingler announced that his three-player taxi squad would consist of catcher Luis Torrens, righty Jerad Eickhoff and lefty Dan Camarena. That trio will join the team during the road trip, making them available for a callup at a moment's notice, without needing to travel to get there.

• Tatis ditched his batting gloves in the fourth inning of Monday’s victory, and the move worked. In his first at-bat with no batting gloves, Tatis laced a triple to left-center field.

“I was just feeling it,” Tatis said. “I was struggling a little bit at the plate, so no batting gloves!”

• Padres rookie Jake Cronenworth notched his first career hit in the ninth inning on Sunday after entering the game as a pinch-runner in the eighth. He laced an RBI double into the right-field corner off D-backs closer Archie Bradley.

"I really didn't know I was going to get into the game, which was probably good," said Cronenworth. "I got that last-second, 'Hey you're going to pinch-run.' ... And then I realized coming off the field I was going to have to hit that inning. I think all of that helped me not have to think too much about anything."
