Texas acquires catcher Chirinos from Rays

ARLINGTON -- The Rangers acquired catcher Robinson Chirinos from Tampa Bay on Monday for a player to be named or cash considerations. To make room on the 40-man roster, left-handed pitcher Jeff Beliveau, currently pitching at Triple-A Round Rock, was designated for assignment.

Chirinos, 28, didn't play in 2012 after sustaining a concussion in Spring Training, but played half a dozen games in winter ball and went for 2-for-9 in Spring Training this year for the Rays. He was DFA'd on March 31, when the Rays set their roster. The Rangers immediately assigned Chirinos to Round Rock.

The deal marks the first trade between the Texas and Tampa Bay franchises.
