Salute to Japanese Baseball Night at Safeco Field

The Seattle Mariners and Panasonic are joining together in a special celebration of Japanese baseball and culture at Safeco Field on Tuesday, August 21, when the Mariners take on the Cleveland Indians. Game time is 7:10 p.m. 

Special prices are available for Salute to Japanese Baseball Night, and a portion of the proceeds from the sale will benefit Peace Winds America and the organization’s continued support of disaster recovery efforts after the 2011 Japan earthquake and tsunami.

View Level tickets, normally $20, will be $14, Field Level seats, usually $40, are $35 and Wells Fargo Terrace Club seats, normally priced at $50 are just $37. Tickets can be purchased online at www.mariners.com.JapanNight. Deadline for this special offer is noon, Monday, August 20.

The first 15,000 fans through the gates will receive limited edition trading cards, courtesy of Panasonic. Each set has 27 cards with seven duplicates of one player to encourage fans to trade with each other to complete their set. Consul General of Japan in Seattle, Kiyokazu Ota, will throw out a first pitch, and there will be performances by taiko drummers, a group that specializes in Japanese baseball fan chants and cheers, as well as other special events before and during the game to celebrate the Japanese culture and rich tradition and history of baseball in Japan.

Mariners Japan Connection

The Mariners have a long association with Japan. From 1998 through the 2002 season the Mariners had a working relationship with the Orix Blue Wave of the Japanese Pacific League. The agreement included the exchange of players, coaches, front office staff, scouting information and mascots. In 2000, the Mariners became the first team in MLB to offer information on its website in Japanese. Since 2001, many Mariners home and road games have been broadcast live on TV in Japan. The Mariners principal owner is Hiroshi Yamauchi, founder of Nintendo Co., Ltd., which is headquartered in Kyoto, Japan. The Mariners currently have two Japanese players on the Major League roster: Hisashi Iwakuma and Munenori Kawasaki.
