Marlins outright Solano, 4 others to Triple-A

MIAMI -- The Marlins did some roster housecleaning on Monday, outrighting five players to Triple-A New Orleans. Among the group was infielder Donovan Solano, who has seen substantial playing time over the past few seasons in a utility role.

Along with Solano, right-handers Preston Claiborne and Erik Cordier and lefties Chris Narveson and Chris Reed were outrighted. Miami's first transactions since the season ended trim the 40-man roster to 35, with three players on the 60-day disabled list.

The decision to remove Solano from the 40-man roster makes Miguel Rojas the early favorite to secure the utility infield spot in Spring Training.

Solano, 27, appeared in 55 games and batted .189 with seven RBIs. In 2014, he made a bigger impact, batting .252 with three homers and 28 RBIs in 111 games. Solano first joined the Marlins in 2012, and he saw regular time at second base in the second half.

In 361 career games, Solano's slash line is .257/.307/.328.

Narveson, 33, was 3-1 with a 4.45 ERA with Miami in 15 appearances, with two starts. Claiborne, meanwhile, missed all of 2015 due to a right shoulder injury.

Cordier made eight relief appearances with a 5.84 ERA, and Reed saw action in two games for Miami, throwing four innings.
