Giants select high school shortstop Christian Arroyo with their first-round selection (25th overall) in the 2013 First-Year Player Draft
With the 25th overall pick in the 2013 First-Year Player Draft, the San Francisco Giants selected shortstop Christian Arroyo out of Hernando High School in Brooksville, Florida.
The 6-foot-1, 180-pound 18-year-old hit .524 (55-for-105), with 42 runs scored, 13 doubles, 11 home runs and 35 RBI along with posting a .580 on-base pct. and a 1.019 slugging mark in 30 games for the Hernando High School Leopards during his senior year.
Arroyo earned MVP honors as he helped Team USA win gold at the International Baseball Federation's 18-and-under World Championships in Seoul, South Korea last summer. He hit .387 and batted in 11 runs in the championships, while playing every inning of the United States 13 games.
He was named as a Second Team High School Pre-season All-American this past season and also this week he was named Class 5A Player of the Year by the Florida Dairy Farmers, making him a finalist for the state's Mr. Baseball award.
Arroyo is the Giants' first selection overall out of High School since Zack Wheeler in 2009.
With the 64th pick in the draft, the Giants selected third baseman Ryder Jones out of Watauga High School, in North Carolina. The 6-foot-3, 185-pound senior batted .480 (35-for-73) with 31 runs, nine doubles, 11 home runs and 43 RBI this past season, leading the Pioneers to a 15-11 record. Jones, who turns 19 years old tomorrow, was named the Gatorade North Carolina Baseball Player of the Year for 2012-13. The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes Jones as North Carolina's best high school baseball player.
His father is the head coach at Appalachian State.
This is the first time since 1974 that the Giants used their top two picks on High School position players. That year the Giants drafted Terry Lee with their first selection (19th overall) out of San Luis Obispo High School (CA) and then Kenny Kolkhorst with their second selection (43rd) out of Waltrip High School in Houston, Texas.
