MILWAUKEE -- The Brewers experienced their first 2020 walk-off celebration on Saturday, and let’s just say they need some work.

Eric Sogard was on the receiving end of a Gatorade bath gone awry when one of the conspirators, infielder Luis Urías, slipped on the on-deck circle at the last moment. No matter, since spirits were high after Sogard’s two-run home run delivered a 7-6 win over the Pirates at Miller Park in a game that almost slipped away from the Brewers.

“Early work Gatorade dumping for Urías tomorrow,” demanded Brewers pitcher Brett Anderson on Twitter.

Even before the slip-up, the whole experience was a tad surreal for the Brewers, who have gone to great lengths to adhere to health and safety protocols this season. That means no high-fives and hugs, a policy that was put to the test after the team took a one-run lead in the eighth inning, saw it get away from lockdown closer Josh Hader in the top of the ninth, then saw the game turn again in the bottom of the inning thanks to Sogard’s first home run all season.

“A no-doubter right off the bat,” said Christian Yelich, which meant the whole team had plenty of time to get to home plate while Sogard circled the bases. They spontaneously formed a semi-circle and tried to stay away, though there were some slaps on the back and pats on the head.

“Everyone was a little timid and wasn't sure what to do,” Sogard said. “It was still exciting to meet the boys at home plate.”

“I tried to be good and follow the rules,” said Yelich, “but it was an exciting time so we may have messed up a few times. What are you going to do? It was a big win for us and I guess that's what your COVID walk-off celebration is going to look like.”

Next time, they will aim to execute the splash at the end, too.
