These teams are reportedly eyeing Adames
MLB.com is keeping track of the latest news and rumors surrounding Willy Adames.
Nov. 15: Adames reportedly has robust market
Adames is drawing “broad” interest across the Majors, according to MLB Network insider Jon Paul Morosi.
While Adames’ market includes teams that have an opening at shortstop, such as the Dodgers, Braves, Giants and Red Sox, there are also a number of clubs eyeing him as a third baseman.
Per Morosi, this includes the Yankees and Blue Jays as well as the Astros, who have a hole at third base after Alex Bregman hit free agency. Houston would like to have Bregman back, but if that doesn't happen, Morosi thinks the club could turn to Adames as a hot-corner replacement.
Adames is a natural shortstop, but The Athletic (subscription required) has reported that he is willing to move to another position for the right team/contract.
Nov. 12: At least 4 teams in the mix for Adames
The Giants, Mets, Yankees and Dodgers are all potential landing spots for Adames this winter, ESPN's Jeff Passan reports in his 2024-25 offseason preview (subscription required).
Passan writes that Adames going to San Francisco "makes all kinds of sense," since the Giants and new president of baseball operations Buster Posey are making the shortstop position a top priority this offseason.
But because of Adames' willingness to play third base, the Mets and Yankees are also being tied to him, per Passan. And Los Angeles, which used a rotating group of shortstops on its World Series run, "will be in the mix" too.
Nov. 8: Why position switch likely won't be necessary for Adames
According to a report from The Athletic (subscription required), Adames is willing to move off his natural position of shortstop for the right team/contract. That could open up new possible landing spots for the 29-year-old slugger, expanding his market to teams who are set at short but could perhaps use a second baseman or a third baseman.
However, in the view of MLB Network insider Jon Paul Morosi, a position switch won't be necessary, "because there is sufficient interest in him as a shortstop."
Per Morosi, the Dodgers, Giants, Braves and Red Sox could all pursue Adames to play short.
Oct. 31: Adames’ potential salary comps in free agency
Coming off a stellar season in which he posted career highs in homers (32), RBIs (112) and steals (21), Adames is poised to become the latest star shortstop to sign a nine-figure deal in free agency.
The Athletic's Jim Bowden (subscription required) predicts a six-year, $150 million deal for Adames while pointing to Dansby Swanson (seven years, $177 million), Javier Báez (six years, $140 million) and Trevor Story (six years, $140 million) as potential comps.
In Bowden’s opinion, the Dodgers should be viewed as "heavy favorites" to land Adames. Los Angeles has a need on the left side of its infield, and president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman has a history with Adames from their time together in the Rays organization.
MLB.com's Mark Feinsand also names the Dodgers as a possible fit for Adames, along with the Blue Jays and Giants.
Given the contract Adames is expected to command, the incumbent Brewers likely won't have room in the budget to re-sign the 29-year-old. Milwaukee has never signed a free agent for more than $80 million (Lorenzo Cain) in its history.
