Everything you need to know about the 2024 Trade Deadline

With the 2024 Trade Deadline fast approaching, here's everything you need to know.

What time is the MLB Trade Deadline?

• When is the MLB Trade Deadline? For 2024, it is scheduled for July 30 at 6 p.m. ET.

• For many years, the Deadline was always on July 31 at 4 p.m. ET. The Commissioner's Office can now set the Deadline for any date between July 28 and Aug. 3, in an effort to avoid conflicting with games.

What is the MLB Trade Deadline?

• The Trade Deadline is the last point during the season at which players on 40-man rosters can be traded from one club to another. Those players may still be placed and claimed on outright waivers, but trades will no longer be permitted after July 30 at 6 p.m. ET. Prior to 2019, July 31 was referred to as the non-waiver Trade Deadline, and players could be traded after that date if they first cleared revocable trade waivers. The August waiver trade period was eliminated in 2019, with MLB moving to a single Deadline.

• Minor Leaguers not on 40-man rosters can still be traded after the Deadline. However, any player must be in an organization by the end of Aug. 31 (whether on the 40-man roster or not) in order to be eligible to appear in the postseason for that club.

What are the key storylines to watch?

How far will the White Sox go in selling?

It's been clear for a while that the White Sox were going to be Trade Deadline sellers this year. The question is, how far will they go in selling?

Chicago shipped out Erick Fedde, Michael Kopech and Tommy Pham in a three-team trade with the Dodgers and Cardinals on Monday.

But will the White Sox look to capitalize on this seller's market and deal ace pitcher Garrett Crochet (controllable through 2026) and/or outfielder Luis Robert Jr. (signed through 2025 with 2026-27 club options) as well?

What will the Blue Jays do?

The Blue Jays are one of the most intriguing teams to watch leading up to the Trade Deadline. Toronto is a seller with many enticing assets to trade, but it’s unclear how many players the club will end up moving.

Danny Jansen, Yimi García and Nate Pearson have already been traded, and designated hitter Justin Turner is on his way to the Mariners (per source). Pending free agents such as starter Yusei Kikuchi and reliever Trevor Richards are the most obvious candidates to be dealt next. But the team also has a number of veteran starters (including Chris Bassitt and Kevin Gausman) signed beyond 2024 who would likely bring back strong returns.

Then there’s first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and injured shortstop Bo Bichette, both of whom can become free agents after 2025.

While Toronto reportedly isn't shopping its controllable players, the club remains open to offers. And with the demand for starters and impact bats high but the supply low, it's certainly possible the Blue Jays will be tempted to make a surprising trade.

Will we see a big surprise in the SP market?

With the demand for starting pitching greatly outweighing the supply, the stage could be set for a Trade Deadline stunner involving one of the best pitchers in baseball.

The chances are still against Tigers ace Tarik Skubal being traded, but in this environment, it’s possible a contender will put together a prospect package that entices Detroit to deal the left-hander, who is controllable through 2026.

Will the Dodgers make a splashy move for a starter?

The Dodgers have a big lead in the NL West and added both Tommy Edman and Michael Kopech on Monday in a three-team trade with the White Sox and Cardinals, but it would be a surprise if they didn't swing at least one more big trade to bolster their rotation.

Who else will the Yankees add?

The Yankees acquired infielder/outfielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. in a trade with the Marlins, but additional moves could be coming, with a reliever, a starter and another bat on their wish list.

Who else will the Rays trade away?

Tampa Bay has been the most active seller so far, trading away Randy Arozarena (Mariners), Zach Eflin (Orioles), Isaac Paredes (Cubs), Aaron Civale (Brewers), Jason Adam (Padres) and Phil Maton (Mets).

However, the team likely isn't done. Yandy Díaz, Pete Fairbanks, Brandon Lowe, Zack Littell, Amed Rosario and Shawn Armstrong are among the notable Rays who could still be dealt before the Deadline.

Are the Cubs a buyer, a seller, or both?

The Cubs have been mentioned as a potential seller, with Jameson Taillon, Cody Bellinger and Nico Hoerner chief among their trade candidates. However, Chicago has been in buying mode so far, adding third baseman Isaac Paredes and pitcher Nate Pearson.
