NEW YORK -- A long, soggy delay did not result in baseball Tuesday night for the Mets and Tigers, who had their game postponed due to rain. The teams will make the game up at 1:10 p.m. ET on Thursday, which was to be a mutual off day.

Although plenty of rain was in the forecast throughout Tuesday afternoon, Mets officials initially believed there was a window to play from around 7 to 9 p.m. That window, however, never opened. Steady rain continued to fall around Queens throughout the evening, prompting the Mets to postpone the game shortly after 9 p.m.

Right-handers Adrian Houser and Casey Mize will push back a day and make their season debuts Wednesday for the Mets and Tigers -- provided the weather allows.

The National Weather Service predicts “likely” rain throughout the afternoon and evening, putting that 7:10 p.m. game in jeopardy as well. It’s unclear if another postponement would prompt the teams to schedule a doubleheader on Thursday or make up the second game later this season. Of note, the Tigers have incentive to get back to Detroit as quickly as possible, as their home opener is scheduled for 1:10 p.m. ET on Friday.

Fans with tickets to Tuesday’s game can either use them on Thursday or exchange them for comparable tickets to a future home game. In addition, anyone who entered Citi Field on Tuesday is eligible to receive an additional ticket to a future weeknight (Monday through Thursday) game at Citi Field.

It has been a wet start to the season for the Mets, who also had Opening Day pushed back a day due to rain. The Mets subsequently lost their first four games and are still looking for their first win.

The rainout meant one more day of waiting for Mize’s first regular season start since April 14, 2022, having come back from Tommy John and back surgeries in 2022. He’ll now start Wednesday, with ace Tarik Skubal pushed back to Thursday. Left-hander Jose Quintana will start Thursday for the Mets.

“It might throw a wrinkle in some things,” said Mize, who said he had several family members and friends set to make the trip to see his return. “But it’s OK. I’ve learned to adapt to whatever comes my way, and I feel pretty OK with whatever happens. I’ll be ready no matter what.”
