Tuesday was a very special day for the Díaz family, as brothers Edwin Díaz of the Mets and Alexis Díaz of the Reds accomplished a feat only two other pairs of siblings have done in AL/NL history.

The Díaz brothers became the third set of brothers to record a save on the same day, the first since Todd and Tim Worrell did so on June 13, 1997. The only other pair to close down two games in a day was Ravelo and Josias Manzanillo on June 30, 1994.

Edwin came in to close the first game of the Mets’ doubleheader with the Cardinals, working a scoreless inning to secure his ninth save of the season. A few hours later, Alexis came in for the Reds to shut down the Guardians in the 10th inning, getting José Ramírez swinging to strike out the side.

What makes it even sweeter is that it was the first save of Alexis’ career. Edwin (182 career saves) made sure to give his brother some love on Twitter in between games as well.

“It means so much to me to get my first career save," Díaz said via translator Jorge Merlos. "It means so much that I am able to do this at the beginning of my career, too."

The simultaneous saves highlight an incredible start to the season for both Díaz brothers. Edwin is nine for 10 in save opportunities this season with a 1.69 ERA, which would be the lowest of his career thus far. He has allowed just three earned runs this season.

Over in the Queen City, Alexis is a bright spot for the Reds in his rookie campaign, as he has allowed just one run across the first 16 appearances of his career, good enough for a minuscule 0.52 ERA.

With both looking terrific in 2022, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the two make even more history later down the line.
