Ng appointed to President's Council on Sports, Fitness & Nutrition

March 24th, 2023

Marlins general manager Kim Ng on Friday morning was among 27 individuals President Joe Biden announced he intended to appoint to the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, & Nutrition.

The President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, & Nutrition is a federal advisory committee that aims to promote healthy, accessible eating and physical activity for all Americans, regardless of background or ability. President Biden issued Executive Order 14048, renewing the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, & Nutrition, which allows for continued promotion of the National Youth Sports Strategy and provides for the work of the Council to include a focus on expanding national awareness of the importance of mental health as it pertains to physical fitness and nutrition.

Others joining Ng are two-time Winter Olympics gold medalist Chloe Kim, retired Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard and Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry.

"It's obviously a great honor and great privilege to serve and to be associated with a lot of these people on the committee," Ng said, "so really excited."

March is Women's History Month, and Ng has been a trailblazer throughout her baseball career.

After over 30 years of experience in MLB, including 21 in the front offices of the White Sox (1990-96), Yankees ('98-2001) and Dodgers ('02-11), she became the first woman to be hired as a general manager for any of the major men's professional North American sports teams in November 2020. She also was the second person of Asian descent to lead an MLB team.

Ng played Division III softball for four years at the University of Chicago and earned a degree in public policy. She told MLB.com's Mark Feinsand last April that she had done her senior thesis on Title IX, the landmark ruling in 1972 that states "no person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."

Earlier this month, CBS Mornings featured Ng and Marlins president of business operations Caroline O'Connor about the importance of gender representation and diversity in sports. They are the only women to have these positions at the same time, for the same organization, in all of professional sports.
