Mum on meeting, Jennings likely to return as GM

MIAMI -- Dan Jennings, known for being personable, usually isn't at a loss for words. But when asked on Friday about his future with the organization, the Marlins' manager was pretty tight-lipped.

On Miami's off-day on Thursday, Jennings met at Marlins Park with president of baseball operations Michael Hill, team president David Samson and owner Jeffrey Loria.

Jennings was so mum on the subject, he didn't even confirm if a meeting took place.

"Was there a meeting? I don't know," Jennings said. "If there was, I wouldn't make it for public disclosure."

Indeed, Jennings did arrive at Marlins Park around 11 a.m. ET on Thursday, and he discussed the direction of the franchise. Although no details were given, there are strong indications Jennings will return as general manager at the end of the season. And despite the team's rough season, Jennings remains in good standing.

"My son's texted me and said, 'Hey, this is being written, that is being written,'" Jennings said. "Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but not everyone is entitled to the facts."

Jennings moved from GM to manager on May 18, replacing Mike Redmond. Jennings is enjoying being in uniform and directly working with the players.

There had been speculation that Jennings would be asked to step down as manager, perhaps even as early as Friday, when the Marlins opened a three-game series with the Mets. Barring anything unforeseen, Jennings is expected to manage through the end of the season.

The Marlins are coming off a 4-2 road trip, including a three-game sweep at Turner Field against the Braves, moving them into third place in the National League East.

"Right now, I'm the manager and that's what I like," Jennings said. "I like the way these guys are playing. We had our first winning road trip, we've moved up in the standings. I'm very, very proud of the way these kids are playing, the way they're going about it, their energy, the quality of their at-bats, up and down the lineup."

Jennings, signed through 2018, was upbeat on Friday. His immediate focus is doing his part to help the team finish strong.

As an organization, the Marlins are making changes at a number of levels. There have been questions about if Jennings would be back as GM or reassigned. What transpires in the offseason will be addressed then. For now, Jennings is doing his part to see how the team plays down the stretch.

The feeling in the organization is the experience Jennings has gained in the dugout should make him an even more understanding GM. What Jennings is seeing on the field right now, he likes.

"I have to tell you, some of these young pitchers are stepping up and definitely taking advantage of this opportunity," Jennings said. "And it's great to see."
