Mariners place Catcher Mike Zunino on 15-day disabled list with fractured hamate bone in left hand
Zunino expected to undergo surgery next week.
SEATTLE, Wash. -- Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager Jack Zduriencik announced today that catcher Mike Zunino has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured hamate bone in his left hand.
A corresponding roster move to fill his spot on the roster will be made prior to tonight's (7:10 pm PT) game vs. the Minnesota Twins.
Zunino, 22, fractured the hamate bone in his left hand on his RBI single to left field in the second inning of last night's game vs. the Twins. He remained in the game for three more innings before being removed prior to the top of the fifth inning. Zunino's injury was confirmed by an MRI exam this morning. He is scheduled to see a Mariners team doctor today, and will undergo surgery early next week. Zunino is expected to miss approximately six weeks.
Since his selection on June 12, Zunino appeared in 29 games with Seattle, batting .242 (24x99) with 4 doubles, 2 home runs and 10 RBI. In his last 11 games (July 8-25), he hit .324 (11x34) with 2 doubles, a home run, 6 RBI and 7 walks. He reached base safely via hit or walk in 10 of the 11 games, and had driven in the "game winning" RBI in each his past three starts.
