Segura back in action after four games out

Seattle SS returns from right arm infection; Zunino out with sore thumb

June 25th, 2018

BALTIMORE -- returned to the Mariners lineup Monday after missing the past four games with an infected right forearm.
The infection was drained by a doctor this past Friday, but it held back Segura's throwing and swinging. Mariners manager Scott Servais said the shortstop was ready to go Monday and placed him in his usual No. 2 spot in the batting order. He went 0-for-3 with two walks in the 5-3 win over Baltimore.
Segura entered Monday's game with a .334 average, six homers and 44 RBIs.
"It's been different not having him out on the field the past four days," Servais said. "[We're] anxious to get him back."
Segura came into the series at Baltimore tied with Atlanta's for first in the Major League with 32 multihit games and stands alone in first with 14 three-plus-hit games. In addition, he has 20 multihit games in his last 37 contests.
Servais said Segura did fine in pregame work and felt he was ready to go.
"He seems to be OK," Servais said.
Sore thumb sidelines Zunino
Servais held catcher Mike Zunino out of the starting lineup to give his sore right thumb a rest.
Zunino was hit by a ball in the dirt over the weekend, Servais said, and has some swelling in the area near the thumb. Zunino played Sunday in the series finale against the Red Sox, but Monday should be his only day out of the starting lineup if all goes according to plan.

"We'll give him a day off today," Servais said before the game. "He'll be in there tomorrow."
Worth noting
• This is the beginning of a four-game series, the final leg of a three-city road trip. The Mariners are 1-5 so far on the trip.
, who on Monday was named the American League Player of the Week, has hit at least 20 homers in each of the last 10 years. He's the only Major Leaguer to do that in every year since 2009. Cruz hit two in the series opener with the Red Sox on Friday for his 19th and 20th on the season.
• The Mariners have done well in their first 26 series this season, getting wins or ties in 21 of them.
