Dee's got speed: Gordon tallies 300th steal
Seattle --- Dee Gordon had been sitting on 299 stolen bases for a while.
"Yeah I knew," Gordon said. " Skip [manager Scott Servais] talks to me about it all the time."
The Mariners second baseman came into Tuesday's 4-1 win over the Angels on a 0-for-13 skid, and things weren't looking much better after he grounded out to the right side in each of his first three at-bats.
But Gordon knocked a single into left field in his fourth trip to the plate, made it to second on a passed ball, then swiped third for stolen base No. 300 of his eight-year Major League career.
"The bat's been a little cool for him lately, but it can come with streaks," Servais said. "With Dee, it's finding some holes and staying with pitches. Nice to see him get one in there tonight."
Gordon's 22 stolen bases this season lead the American League, and he's slid into a three-way tie with Ender Inciarte and Trea Turner for second place on the MLB leaderboard. Michael A. Taylor leads baseball with 23 stolen bases.
Jose Reyes and Rajai Davis are the only other active players with 300 or more career stolen bases. Gordon last swiped a bag on June 27 in Baltimore.
Servais was quick to turn his attention to the defense in praising Gordon, who charged toward a ball and fired across his body to keep Kole Calhoun from picking up an infield single in the second inning.
"The number of plays that we made defensively in our infield was awesome," Servais said. "And hat's off to Ryon Healy, because he made a couple really nice picks to finish plays as well."
Jean Segura also made a nice play Tuesday night, ranging to his left to snag a a chopper and fire to first to retire Justin Upton.
