Champ! Teoscar becomes Dodgers' first Home Run Derby winner

ARLINGTON -- Coming into the 2024 T-Mobile Home Run Derby, Dodgers outfielder had only hit one homer at Globe Life Field. In one night, he smashed 49.

That was the total Hernández needed to be crowned the winner of the Derby on Monday. He became the first Dodger to accomplish the feat in what was his first career Derby appearance.

Hernández pummeled dinger after dinger into the left-field stands -- and, along the way, he shared fun moments with his teammates and friends.

Pitching to Hernández was Dino Ebel, the Dodgers’ third-base coach. The first long ball he launched was his longest of the night, flying a Statcast-projected 466 feet into left field at 108 mph. The 31-year-old connected with five more before needing a rest, calling for a strategic timeout at the 1:30 mark of his turn.

Hernández’s Dodgers teammates came out to give him water and a towel to recharge. But there was also movement from the American League side.

Donning a No. 37 Blue Jays Hernández jersey, Toronto first baseman and 2023 Derby winner Vladimir Guerrero Jr. walked over to his former teammate, accompanied by Yankees outfielder Juan Soto. Soto, Guerrero and Shohei Ohtani gave some tips to improve his swing.

The advice worked and Hernández’s bat caught fire.

As the Dominican stepped back in the box, Hernández smashed seven home runs to close out his regular time and then six more in his bonus round. Hernández’s 19 homers averaged 430 feet with an average exit velocity of 97.3 mph.

Hernández’s first-round homer count tied his first-half total. He is tied for fifth in the National League and tied for 14th in MLB.

The two-time All-Star was up to bat first in the semifinal matchup with Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm. Hernández took his timeout at the same time as the previous round. However, he had only hit three long balls this time.

Once again, Hernández returned to the box and got back into a rhythm. His total racked up to 11 before time ran out. In the bonus round, he hit three more for a total of 14. During his timeout and before the bonus round, he got additional pep talks from Guerrero.

Bohm also hit 14 homers, which under this year’s rules meant a swing-off was necessary to break the tie. The Dodgers vet went 2-for-3 in his turn, enough to best Bohm, who hit just one.

That put Hernández in line to face Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. in a fight for the Derby trophy, and he set the tone by swatting 14 shots, eight of which flew farther than 425 feet. Then, all Hernández could do was sit and watch.

Things got tense as Witt hit 11 in regular time, and even more so when he came one away from tying the score in the bonus time. But he failed to convert, making Hernández the winner.

Guerrero approached his friend for the final time on the field, this time to pass on the winner’s chain.
