Maeda to start Tuesday after backup closing role

Hill, Martin eye return to L.A. next weekend

April 22nd, 2019

MILWAUKEE -- Kenta Maeda was the Dodgers’ standby closer Saturday night had the club needed one, but Kenley Jansen was back in the role for Sunday’s 6-5 win in the series finale with the Brewers, picking up the win after allowing a three-run home run in the eighth in an attempt to record a four-out save.

Because Jansen had pitched Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, he was unavailable Saturday night, when the Dodgers lost, 5-0. Maeda went to the bullpen in the seventh inning of that game and manager Dave Roberts said he would have been used with a lead in the eighth or ninth inning.

When that didn’t happen, Maeda spent the top of the ninth inning throwing a light bullpen session in preparation for his next scheduled start Tuesday at Wrigley Field. Had Maeda pitched Saturday night, Roberts said, Maeda would have switched starting days with Wednesday’s starter, Walker Buehler.

Maeda, exclusively a starting pitcher in his rookie season of 2016, made four relief appearances in 2017 with one save and 19 regular-season relief appearances in 2018 with two saves. He also pitched exclusively in relief in the 2017 and 2018 postseasons.

Rich Hill said he will drive to Chicago during Sunday’s game, fly from Chicago to Phoenix, pitch five innings in an extended spring training game at Camelback Ranch on Monday morning, then fly back to Chicago on Monday when the Dodgers are off, remain with the club and will be activated to start next Sunday for the Dodgers at home. When Hill returns, Ross Stripling is expected to go to the bullpen.

Russell Martin apparently has successfully lobbied against playing in a Minor League rehab stint. Roberts said the plan now is for Martin to catch a simulated game Friday and, if his healed lower back holds up, be activated for next weekend’s home series against Pittsburgh.
