Notes: Final weekend pitching plans; DH
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts hesitatingly filled in some of the gaps about his pitching plans leading into next week’s Wild Card Series.
Roberts said Clayton Kershaw will make his normal start on Friday. Dustin May and Tony Gonsolin will pitch Saturday or Sunday, but Roberts wouldn’t say if they will start or be used in the same “bulk innings” fashion as Julio Urías was Wednesday night, when he allowed one run in six innings of relief.
Roberts earlier had said Kershaw and Walker Buehler would start the first two games of the best-of-three Wild Card Series, but indicated the order they pitch will depend in large part on the condition of Buehler’s right index finger blister. The opponent, which probably won’t be known until Sunday, also could impact the decision.
Game 3 could involve any combination of his other starters -- Gonsolin, May and Urías -- along with rested relievers.
How important are Kershaw and Buehler to a World Series run?
“I mean, it’s almost everything. I think that’s just speaking frankly,” said Roberts. “When you’re talking about winning a championship, you have to have guys at the top, because it gives everyone else opportunities to be in their best roles. You have to lean on guys like that. Both those guys understand that.”
Roberts said the value of dominant starting pitchers in the postseason can’t be overstated.
“For top-end guys to take down meaningful innings, to not tax the bullpen, to cover a night of offense that you might not have and still win a baseball game, it can’t be understated,” he said.
• Roberts called the designated hitter rule, used by the National League this year for the first time, “such a pleasant, pleasant surprise.”
“A lot of National League teams are using it as a day to revolve to give days off,” he said. “We’ve done it with a number of guys and for me, it’s felt good because it allows guys to manage their workload but still get at-bats.”
Roberts said he expects to narrow the DH participants in the postseason to a trio. He wouldn’t name them, but they probably are Joc Pederson, AJ Pollock and Justin Turner. Those three have combined to start as DH in 32 of the Dodgers’ 57 games.
