Notes: Smith returning; Wood, Ríos
A handful of Dodgers currently on the injured list are progressing toward a return, with catcher Will Smith being activated on Sunday to start behind the plate.
Smith caught a bullpen session on Saturday. He had been out with neck stiffness and his return prompted the optioning of Keibert Ruiz ahead of Sunday's game against the Rockies.
Starting pitcher Alex Wood is scheduled to throw a four-inning simulated game on Monday, followed in two or three days by a bullpen session. After that, Roberts said, the goal is to activate Wood. With that timetable, Wood could get a start before the end of the month, giving management a chance to see him pitch before the Aug. 31 Trade Deadline.
Edwin Ríos, out with a hamstring strain, was a full participant in pregame workouts on Saturday and is expected to be activated when he’s eligible on Thursday.
Joe Kelly continues to play catch as he rehabs his shoulder, with no timetable. He still must serve a five-game suspension after he’s healthy.
