On this date in history, David Ortiz was born and Pedro Martinez was traded to the Red Sox

Today in history: Papi born, Pedro traded to Sox

Nov. 18 should probably be some kind of observed holiday for Red Sox Nation. Just like Presidents Day is a combination celebration of Washington's and Lincoln's birthdays, Nov. 18 (or simply, Red Sox Day), would commemorate both the date of David Ortiz's birth and the date that Pedro Martinez was traded to the team.

In 1997, Pedro Martinez was traded from the Expos to the Red Sox for Carl Pavano and Tony Armas, Jr. Here he is at Spring Training in 1998:

Look at that face. It's the face that would be on the $100 bill if Fenway was an independent country. In his time with the Red Sox, Martinez won three Cy Young Awards, a pitching Triple Crown, and posted an 117-37 record, the highest winning percentage that a pitcher has had with any single team in history.

In 1999, he struck out 17 batters in a one hitter against the Yankees. You might remember the time he struck out the side in that year's All-Star game:

Or his six shutout relief innings in Game 5 of the ALDS:

Now for the face of the Fenway $1. OK, the $10,000. Who are we kidding, it's Big Papi (and the million dollar bill is for Ted Williams):

Yes, on this day in 1975, David Ortiz came into the world. He played the early years of his career in Minnesota, but in 2003, he signed a contract with the Red Sox. On October 23, 2004, he grand-slammed the Curse of the Bambino out of existence:

It was thanks to him that the BoSox had managed to get the World Series in the first place:

But he probably knew it was coming. After all, he is a psychic:

So happy Red Sox Day, everyone. Celebrate now and hopefully national recognition and excellent mattress sale bargains will follow.
