CLEVELAND -- Eric Thames is scheduled to test his surgically-repaired left thumb in a rehab assignment with Triple-A Colorado Springs beginning Wednesday in Fresno, Calif., meaning potential logjams at first base and in the outfield may finally be nearing reality for the Brewers.
Manager Craig Counsell calls it a good problem to have.
"He's going to play some outfield during his rehab stint, I'll just tell you that," Counsell said. "Look, first of all, it's five days away, so who knows? And we're going to have a lot of good players. We're back to the healthy situation that you guys fretted about all Spring Training.
"So, we'll have to make a decision on who plays every day. That's the way it will work. There will be some good players who will be occasionally left out of the lineup. We'll have some tough decisions to make, sure. Hopefully we can get everybody back healthy."
Counsell had similar things to say all spring, when he insisted that the Brewers' crowded outfield and first base situations would work themselves out. That's just what happened, with Christian Yelich (oblique), Ryan Braun (back) and Thames all requiring stints on the 10-day disabled list.

Thames has been sidelined since tearing a ligament in his left thumb on April 24 in Kansas City. He had a final check-up with the surgeon on Monday in Phoenix before playing the first of two extended spring training games with "nothing to note," Counsell said.
A five-day assignment would put Thames back in the big leagues on Monday for the start of a Brewers homestand against the Cubs and Phillies, though the timetable is open-ended depending on Thames' health.

• The Sky Sox activated catcher Jacob Nottingham, MLB Pipeline's No. 25 Brewers prospect, from the DL on Tuesday following a three-week absence for a rib cage injury. The team also activated another catcher, Jett Bandy, three days after Bandy was outrighted to Colorado Springs.
• Right-hander Jimmy Nelson isn't with the team for the rest of this road trip, but that was no cause for concern, Counsell said. With other players further along in their recovery from injuries, the team decided before this trip that Nelson would continue his throwing program at Miller Park.
• Minor League outfielder Joantgel Segovia earned a promotion to Class A Advanced Carolina on Tuesday after posting a .347/.397/.441 slash line at Class A Wisconsin.
