Chourio, Mitchell blast Brewers into deciding Game 3

MILWAUKEE – Like a kid on the sandlot, the Brewers’ 20-year-old rookie sensation wasn’t ready to go home.

With the Brewers six outs from elimination, led off the eighth inning of Game 2 of the Wild Card Series with his second home run of the night, a tying shot off Mets setup man Phil Maton. When followed four batters later with a go-ahead, two-run shot, it sent the Brewers to a 5-3 win over the Mets in Game 2 of the NL Wild Card Series on Wednesday night at American Family Field.

It was a comeback that had eluded the Brewers in recent years, as they entered the tilt having lost 20 consecutive postseason games when trailing at the end of six innings. But the Mets came into the contest with a 39-8 (.830) record when leading through six innings in the postseason, the sixth-lowest winning percentage among active franchises.

When Devin Williams finished a sensational showing for a Brewers bullpen that posted the league’s best ERA during the regular season, it ensured there would be a decisive Game 3 here on Thursday.

Chourio, batting leadoff against the Mets just like he did on Opening Day at Citi Field, led the way. When he homered leading off the first inning, only four players in postseason history had homered at a younger age. And when Chourio went deep again in the eighth, it made him the second player with multiple home runs in a postseason game before his 21st birthday. The other, Andruw Jones, did it as a 19-year-old in Game 1 of the 1996 World Series.
