Counsell on Skaggs' passing: 'It’s shocking'

CINCINNATI -- Brewers left-hander turned down the music and turned up the volume on the visitors’ clubhouse television on Monday at Great American Ball Park.

Third baseman sat on a couch, watching intently as teammates patted his shoulder and back. Other players were similarly glued to the TVs. When the MLB Network went to a commercial, the volume was turned down and the only sound was players taking batting practice in the adjacent indoor cage.

The Brewers were reacting to the news that Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs, 27, had been found dead in his Texas hotel room earlier on Monday.

Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell said he believed Moustakas and outfielder , Southern California products like Skaggs, knew the former D-backs pitcher.

“They were Valley kids,” Counsell said. “They were a little older than him, but I’m sure they’d run across him.

“He’d just gotten married,” Counsell added. “He was just starting life. It’s shocking. It rocks everybody’s world.”

Gio throws bullpen

Gonzalez threw a bullpen session on Monday, Counsell said. It was the left-hander’s first throwing session on other than flat ground since June 23.

Gonzalez, 33, has been on the 10-day injured list since June 1 with what was described as left arm fatigue. He threw a bullpen session on June 18 before reporting soreness during another session on a mound on June 23.

The Brewers have no timetable for Gonzalez’s return.

“We have some bullpens to go,” Counsell said.

Smyly signs Minors deal

The Brewers' player development department announced via Twitter on Monday night that left-handed pitcher Drew Smyly has signed a Minor League contract with the club.

Smyly, 30, who missed all of 2017 and '18 after undergoing Tommy John surgery, was designated for assignment by the Rangers on June 20 after going 1-5 with an 8.42 ERA in nine starts and four relief appearances.

He is a combined 32-32 with a 4.13 ERA in 94 starts and 75 relief appearances over six seasons with Detroit, Tampa Bay and Texas.
