Will Smith activated as Braves get to 28
ATLANTA -- All-Star reliever Will Smith was activated from the injured list and added to the Braves’ active roster, which was reduced from 30 players to 28 before Thursday night’s series finale against the Blue Jays.
Along with activating Smith, the Braves designated outfielder Scott Schebler for assignment. The other two roster spots were eliminated by optioning catcher Alex Jackson and right-handed reliever Chad Sobotka to the team’s alternate training site.
Smith tested positive for COVID-19 before Summer Camp began on July 3 and was not cleared to return to the team’s facilities until July 26. He remained asymptomatic throughout the month and thus was able to expedite his preparations over the past 10 days.
Smith threw live batting practice at Truist Park on Monday, and he had been originally scheduled to pitch in a simulated game on Thursday. But the Braves opted to go ahead and activate him one day earlier than expected.
“He was rearing to go,” Braves manager Brian Snitker said. “So, why not give him a real inning and let him use what he was going to expend [on Thursday afternoon]? I know he was excited about getting back. A guy with his experience, as soon as he tells me he’s good and ready to go, I trust him.”
Smith converted 34 of 38 save opportunities for the Giants last season and earned his first All-Star selection. The 31-year-old left-hander posted a 2.76 ERA over 65 1/3 innings (63 appearances) and limited opponents to a .196 batting average.
Mark Melancon has been labeled the team’s closer dating back to when Smith signed a three-year, $39 million deal in November. But the addition of Smith adds another closing option and high-quality depth to a bullpen that has impressed with a 2.79 ERA through 13 games.
Schebler has had just one plate appearance since being acquired from the Reds for cash considerations on July 25. He became expendable when Nick Markakis decided to return to the team last Wednesday.
