Piscotty ready to produce after lengthy IL stint
Bride hits injured list (right shoulder) after outfield collision
NEW YORK -- The A's activated outfielder Stephen Piscotty from the injured list on Tuesday and placed infielder Jonah Bride on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to Monday) with a strained right shoulder.
Piscotty, who missed 47 games because of a left calf strain, was the designated hitter in Tuesday’s game against the Yankees. However, he will also spend time in the corner outfield spots, according to manager Mark Kotsay.
Piscotty had a strong rehab stint with Triple-A Las Vegas, going 8-for-21 with an .864 OPS in five games.
“I had a good week in Vegas. I was able to get back on my feet, playing again. It was a lot of fun,” Piscotty said. “Anytime you are in the lineup is a good day.”
Piscotty hopes to stay healthy for the rest of the season. With the exception of the shortened 2020 season, Piscotty hasn’t been able to avoid the injury bug, but he's determined to be in the lineup and help Oakland win games.
“I always want to produce. That’s why we play,” Piscotty said. "Sometimes, you go through those spurts and you have to learn from those experiences. I’m trying to take all that, bottle it, move on and you learn from them.”
Asked what’s the biggest thing he learned since he joined the A’s in 2018, Piscotty said, “I feel like you are always learning. Baseball is a game of adjustments. Each year seems to present its own challenges. Pitchers pitching a different way, different styles. You are never in cruise control. You kind of working on something. Right now, it’s hitting and being more consistent at the plate."
The MLB Trade Deadline is Aug. 2 this season. Now that he is back on the field, it is possible a pennant contender could use Piscotty's services. When healthy, he has some pop and can drive in runs.
“I don’t know if I will get traded,” Piscotty said. “I’ve been focused on getting healthy, and that’s about it. I want to have a good couple of weeks and build off where [I was in Vegas]. [Potentially being traded] hasn’t crossed my mind.”
As for Bride, it appeared that his right shoulder was getting better on Monday, but he got an MRI on the shoulder on Tuesday to find out the seriousness of the injury. Bride hurt the shoulder in Sunday’s game against the Royals, when he collided with outfielder Chad Pinder while chasing a fly ball hit into shallow right field.
Bride hit .333 over his first seven games this season, but he went 1-for-17 over his final five contests before he was injured.
“We were excited about having Jonah,” Kotsay said. “Obviously, he had the opportunity and performed. What we’ve seen so far, we’ve liked -- the progress he made defensively. … It’s an unfortunate time for him to have this injury.”
