A's acquire LHP Irvin in trade with Phils
The A’s acquired left-hander Cole Irvin from the Phillies for cash considerations, the club announced Saturday. The club’s 40-man roster is now full.
Irvin, 26, has posted a 6.75 ERA with 35 strikeouts, 14 walks and eight homers allowed in 19 career appearances (three starts) over the last two seasons with Philadelphia. He made three appearances in 2020, allowing seven runs in 3 2/3 innings.
Irvin, a fifth-round selection by the Phillies in the 2016 Draft out of the University of Oregon, has fared much better in the Minor Leagues. The strike-thrower has a career 3.07 ERA with 351 strikeouts, 95 walks and 40 homers allowed in 452 innings over four seasons. He's also been a starter in the Minors, making 72 starts compared to six relief appearances.
Irvin, an Anaheim native, is likely to come into camp stretched out to start but could be converted back to relief depending on how he fares and the club’s needs. Irvin is eligible for arbitration in 2024 and is under team control through 2026. He also has one year left of Minor League options, which means he can be sent to and from the Minors freely in ’21 without having to be put on waivers.
