Rangers claim catcher Centeno from Astros
ARLINGTON -- The Rangers added to their depth behind the plate by claiming catcher Juan Centeno off waivers from the Astros on Monday. The Rangers now have 38 players on their Major League roster.
Centeno, a left-handed hitter, had three tours with the Astros this past season, hitting .231 with two home runs and four RBIs in 22 games, including 15 starts. Texas will be his fifth organization. Centeno was on the Astros' postseason roster, but played in just one game.

Centeno has played in the Major Leagues in parts of the past five seasons with the Mets, Brewers, Twins and Astros. In 101 games, he has hit .235 with a .289 on-base percentage and a .346 slugging percentage.
Defensively, he has thrown out just six of 47 attempted basestealers for a 13 percent success rate. He has 13 passed balls in 95 games behind the plate.
Centeno gives the Rangers four catchers on their 40-man roster. Robinson Chirinos is the starter, with Brett Nicholas, another left-handed hitter, as the current backup. Rookie Jose Trevino, who was in Double-A last year, was added to the roster earlier this month to protect against the Rule 5 Draft.
