HOUSTON -- Responding to an ESPN report posted Monday that said José Urquidy could be headed for his second Tommy John surgery, Astros officials offered only that the right-hander, who has a forearm strain, is awaiting a second opinion from doctors.

ESPN’s Alden González and Jeff Passan reported that Urquidy, who was pulled from his May 24 rehab start at Triple-A after experiencing right forearm discomfort, was headed to Dallas to be examined by Dr. Keith Meister and could be facing a second Tommy John procedure.

General manager Dana Brown refuted the report, telling reporters on Monday, “That’s not the information we have right now. That’s why we’re getting a second opinion. We’ll know more in a couple days.”

Manager Joe Espada said the first opinion on Urquidy was “inflammation on the elbow” and the first opinion on right-hander Cristian Javier was a forearm issue.

“We’re going to get the second opinion, and then we’ll have more clarity," Brown said. "As I mentioned before, these things, it’s all about how the player feels. We’ll get second opinions and know something probably in a couple days."

Urquidy underwent Tommy John surgery in 2017, two years ahead of his big league debut in ‘19. He went 3-3 with a 5.29 ERA in 16 games (10 starts) last season and spent three months on the IL with right shoulder discomfort.
