Astros Stat of the Day: August 2021

Aug. 31: Mariners 4, Astros 0 -- Altuve's rare August
Astros second baseman Jose Altuve didn't hit a home run in August in 119 plate appearances over 26 games. It's the first time he didn't homer in a calendar month in which he played at least 10 games since June 2014 (103 plate appearances in 24 games).
Aug. 30: Astros 4, Mariners 3 -- Tucker surging in return
Outfielder Kyle Tucker is hitting .450 (9-for-20) with five runs scored in six games since returning from a bout with COVID-19 that had him on the injured list for 10 days.
Aug. 29: Rangers 13, Astros 2 -- Alvarez hits one to the moon
Yordan Alvarez’s homer in the fifth inning had a launch angle of 41 degrees, according to Statcast, making it the highest launch angle of any of his 56 career homers. In fact, it’s the third-highest launch angle by a Houston batter this season.
Aug. 28: Astros 5, Rangers 2 -- Correa keeps mashing
Carlos Correa hit his 20th long ball of the season, marking his fifth career 20-homer season. He's four homers shy of tying his career high of 24 in 2017.
Aug. 27: Astros 5, Rangers 4 -- All Astros in the Lone Star State
The Astros won their 10th game of the season against the Rangers (10-3), clinching the season series over the Lone Star State rivals for the fifth year in a row. The Astros are 52-28 against the Rangers since the start of the 2017 season. They were 24-58 against them in the five previous seasons (2012-16).
Aug. 25: Astros 6, Royals 5 (10 innings) -- Winning record vs. every AL division
The Astros went 19-16 against the American League Central this season and are the only team in the AL that has a winning record against all three divisions. They are 34-16 against the AL West and 16-12 against the AL East.
Aug. 24: Astros 4, Royals 0 -- Rookie on a roll
Luis Garcia recorded his eighth quality start in the victory. The Astros are 8-0 in his eight quality starts this year.
Aug. 23: Royals 7, Astros 1 -- Tough luck for Greinke
Zack Greinke pitched his team-leading 15th quality start of the season, but he suffered his first loss (9-1) in a game in which he had a quality start.
Aug. 22: Mariners 6, Astros 3 (11 innings) -- Nearly sure after 8
The loss to the Mariners was only the second time the Astros dropped a game when leading after eight innings in 65 games this season (63-2). The other loss was on May 29 against the Padres in Houston, an 11-8 setback in 12 innings.
Aug. 21: Astros 15, Mariners 1 -- Jones on a tear
Taylor Jones went 3-for-5 with a home run, triple, double and four RBIs. In 10 games since being recalled on Aug. 6, he's batting .300 with four doubles, two homers, a triple and 10 RBIs.
Aug. 20: Astros 12, Mariners 3 -- Meyers heating up
Jake Meyers has been on a tear since his callup from Triple-A on July 31. He knocked a two-run home run in the victory and is hitting .306 with three homers and seven RBIs since he was promoted.
Aug. 19: Astros 6, Royals 3 (10 innings) -- Baker hits 100
Manager Dusty Baker picked up his 100th career regular-season win with the Astros, putting him 10 behind Bo Porter for 16th place on the club's all-time list. Baker has 1,963 career wins with the Giants, Cubs, Reds, Nationals and Astros.
Aug. 18: Royals 3, Astros 2 -- Greinke no K's?
Zack Greinke became the first Astros pitcher with no strikeouts while throwing at least six innings since Roberto Hernandez on May 14, 2015, and the first with no strikeouts or walks since Brian Moehler on Sept. 10, 2008, vs. the Pirates.
Aug. 17: Royals 3, Astros 1 -- Tough night in Kansas City
The Astros have lost consecutive games to the Royals for the first time since June 6-7, 2017, snapping a 13-game stretch in which they went 11-2 in between consecutive losses to Kansas City.
Aug. 16: Royals 7, Astros 6 -- No luck in tight games
The Astros are 20-24 in games decided by two runs or fewer, including 12-13 in one-run games this season. They have not won a game decided by one run since July 19 vs. Cleveland, going 0-3 since.
Aug. 15: Angels 3, Astros 1 -- Offensive streak ends
The Astros’ franchise-record streak of scoring at least three runs a game came to an end in the loss to the Angels. They had scored at least three runs in 22 consecutive games, which is the longest streak in the Majors since the Rangers did it 23 games in a row in June 2019.
Aug. 14: Astros 8, Angels 2 -- Count on three from Houston
The Astros set a franchise record by scoring at least three runs in their 22nd consecutive game. They are the only team in the Major Leagues to accomplish that feat this season.
Aug. 13: Astros 4, Angels 1 -- Greinke moving up wins list
Zack Greinke threw seven scoreless innings to beat the Angels for his 219th career win. He moved into a tie with Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez and Kenny Rogers for 80th on the all-time list.
Aug. 11: Astros 5, Rockies 1 -- Brantley for 3
Astros designated hitter Michael Brantley went 3-for-5, giving him his Major League-leading 15th three-hit game of the season.
Aug. 10: Astros 5, Rockies 0 -- Altuve's home cooking
Jose Altuve went 1-for-3 and drove in a run in the sixth inning, marking his 293rd career RBI at Minute Maid Park. That’s the fourth best in ballpark history, trailing Carlos Lee (297 RBIs) by four RBIs on that list.
Aug. 8: Twins 7, Astros 5 -- Astros keep mashing
Carlos Correa's 18th home run of the season, which came in the eighth inning, extended the Astros' streak of consecutive games with a homer to 18, which is the longest in the Major Leagues since 2019. The Astros have hit 32 homers in their last 18 games.
Aug. 7: Astros 4, Twins 0 -- Hot start to Yordan's career
The home run Yordan Alvarez hit in the fourth inning was the 50th of his career, making him the fastest player in franchise history to reach 50 homers. Alvarez did it in 184 games. Lance Berkman, who previously held the record, did it in 231 games.
Aug. 6: Twins 5, Astros 4 (11) -- Brantley red-hot vs. the Twins
Michael Brantley went 2-for-5 on Friday and has recorded a hit in 11 of his last 12 games against the Twins, hitting .480 (24-for-50) in that span. His 155 career hits against Minnesota are the second-most against a single opponent (176 against the Tigers).
Aug. 5: Twins 5, Astros 3 -- Astros on a homer roll
The Astros have homered in a season-high 15 consecutive games since July 19, hitting 28 in that span. That streak is tied for the third-longest in the Majors this season, one shy of the 16-game streaks by the Twins and Braves.
Aug. 4: Dodgers 7, Astros 5 -- Altuve's very rare Golden Sombrero
Jose Altuve went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts in the loss, which was just the second time in his career he struck out four times in a game. The previous one came on Aug. 29, 2018, against the A’s, when he went 1-for-5 with four strikeouts.
Aug. 3: Astros 3, Dodgers 1 -- Tough competition? No problem
With the win, the Astros improved to 43-25 against teams with records of .500 or better this year, which marks the most wins and best winning percentage against those clubs in Major League Baseball. The Dodgers, meanwhile, are 23-26 against teams .500 or better.
Aug. 1: Giants 5, Astros 3 -- New arms contribute
Kendall Graveman, Yimi García, Phil Maton and Rafael Montero, all of whom were acquired this week to bolster the bullpen, combined to allow just one run in 5 2/3 innings in this three-game series against the Giants.
