Career timeline: Alex Bregman

Hold that Tiger!

On the day shortstop Carlos Correa made his highly anticipated Major League debut for the Astros on June 8, 2015, the club drafted another shortstop, LSU's Alex Bregman, with the No. 2 overall pick in the MLB Draft, prompting a teammate to tease Correa that they had already drafted his replacement

Welcome to The Show

Bregman made his MLB debut on July 25, 2016, against the Yankees, going 0-for-4 (and eventually 1-for-32 to start his career) as the Astros started seven homegrown players at the start of a dynasty in the making

Finally

After beginning his Major League career hitless in his first 18 at-bats, Bregman finally picked up his first big league hit on July 31, 2016, with a third-inning single off Mike Pelfrey of the Tigers

Oh, mother

Bregman didn’t hit his first home of the 2017 season until May 14, when he hit a first-inning grand slam in the second game of a doubleheader on Derek Jeter Night at Yankee Stadium with his mother – a Long Island native who grew up a Yankees fan – in the stands

Legend of the fall

In his first career postseason plate appearance, Bregman homered off All-Star lefty Chris Sale in Game 1 of the ALDS on Oct. 5, 2017, at Minute Maid Park, becoming the second-youngest player in Astros history (behind Carlos Correa) to homer in a postseason game

Walk-off winner

In one of the most epic World Series games in history, Bregman’s walk-off single off Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen scored pinch-runner Derek Fisher to send the Astros to a 13-12 win in 10 innings and a 3-2 series lead

A star is born

Bregman, who was the MVP of the All-Star Game, established himself as one of the game’s top third baseman in 2018 by joining Lou Gehrig as the only players in Major League history with at least 50 doubles, 30 homers, 90 walks and 10 stolen bases in a season

Here to stay

Coming off his remarkable 2018 season, Bregman signed a five-year, $100 million extension on March 22, 2019

Historic 2019

Bregman finished a close second to Mike Trout in the 2019 AL MVP race after joining Barry Bonds (1993), Ted Williams (1949), Lou Gehrig (1936) and Babe Ruth (1921, ’24) as the only players in MLB history with at least 41 homers, 119 walks, 37 doubles and 83 or fewer strikeouts in a season

Grand fashion

After helping the Astros reach the World Series in 2019, Bregman bashed three homers in the Fall Classic against Washington, including a grand slam in Game 4 that was the 20th grand slam in World Series history

Helping hand

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Bregman raised more than $2 million for the Houston Food Bank with his #FEEDHOU social media campaign

A winner

In six full Major League seasons (2017-22), Bregman has advanced to at least the ALCS each year, making four World Series appearances and winning two, and has 15 career postseason homers and 47 RBIs – both Major League records for third basemen.
