2022 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers recap

2022 hosts

The final four spots in the 2023 World Baseball Classic were up for grabs in the 2022 Qualifiers in Panama City, Panama, and Regensburg, Germany.

Germany: 9/15-9/21

In the Regensburg Qualifier, Germany served as host, while the Czech Republic, France, Great Britain, South Africa and Spain rounded out the pool.

Panama: 9/30-10/5

In addition to Panama, the Panama City Qualifier featured Argentina, Brazil, Nicaragua, Pakistan and New Zealand.

Great Britain's offense breaks out

In Regensburg, Great Britain swept aside France and Germany with 22 runs through two games. Harry Ford sealed the win over the host squad with a homer.

Great Britain stuns Spain

In a stunning comeback, Great Britain rallied from 8-3 down to walk-off with a qualifying bid against Spain in a 10-9 victory.

Czech Republic avoids elimination...

The Czech Republic shook off a 21-7 loss to Spain and won consecutive elimination games to reach a winner-take-all rematch. Martin Cervenka provided the power vs. Germany.

...and earns bid over Spain

The Czech team defeated Spain, 3-1, in the final Regensburg game, securing a spot in the 2023 Classic.

Panama shows out at home

In Panama City, the hosts shut out Argentina, 11-0, with Allen Cordoba and Ruben Tejada pacing Panama with two RBI hits each.

Brazil starts 2-0

Brazil got off to a hot start in Panama City with wins over New Zealand and Nicaragua. Former MLB outfielder Tim Lopes led the offensive charge with a home run.

Panama tops Brazil, qualifies for Classic

Panama clinched a spot in the 2023 Classic with a 4-0 shutout against Brazil. Alberto Baldonado struck out Christian Lopes to secure the final out.

Britton keeps Nicaragua alive

After the early loss to Brazil, Nicaragua shut out Pakistan before coming back to beat Argentina, 6-5. Dwight Britton's go-ahead single set up a rematch with Brazil to close qualifiers.

Nicaragua earns final spot

Nicaragua's Osman Gutierrez held Brazil to one run over six innings, leading the way in a 3-1 victory to clinch the last qualifying bid.
