Hal McRae

Playing with a hard-nosed, aggressive style that set him apart, McRae's example set a tone his teammates would follow. He won two Royals Player of the Year honors and was selected as an All-Star three times. McRae led the league in doubles twice, and topped the league in RBI (133) in 1982. One of the first players to take the designated hitter role to star status, he finished his career second on the Royals career list in both doubles (449) and RBIs (1,012). McRae later managed the Royals from 1991 to 1994, posting a 286-277 (.508) record.

Hal McRae, whose All-Star career came primarily as a designated hitter, was enshrined into the Royals Hall of Fame in 1989. McRae also managed Kansas City from 1991-94.

In 1982, McRae was one of five Royals named to the All-Star team during what was by far the finest season of his career. In a remarkable season, the outfielder and DH hit .308 with 27 home runs and a staggering 133 RBIs.

After a so-so first season with the Royals, McRae broke out in 1974, hitting 15 home runs and driving in 88 to go along with stolen bases and a .310 batting average.
