With their first-round selection (20th overall) of the 2021 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, the New York Yankees selected SS Trey Sweeney from Eastern Illinois University.

Sweeney, a 6-foot-4, 200-pound, left-handed hitting shortstop, batted .382/.522/.712 (65-for-170) with 52R, 10 doubles, 2 triples, 14HR, 58RBI, 46BB (a single season school record) and 3SB in 48 games in his recent redshirt sophomore campaign in 2021. He was tabbed a First Team All-American by Baseball America, Perfect Game and ABCA (American Baseball Coaches Association), becoming the first player in program history to earn First Team All-American honors at the NCAA Division I level. He was also named Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year, becoming just the fourth player in program history to earn the honor.

He was also named one of six finalists this past collegiate season for the Brooks Wallace Award, honoring the nation's top shortstop with equal weight placed on defensive and offensive performance. Sweeney recorded a .975 fielding percentage, committing just five errors on the year.

Over his three collegiate seasons, the Louisville, Ky., native batted .328/.437/.517 (134-for-408) with 87R, 22 doubles, 2 triples, 17HR, 96RBI, 72BB and 7SB. He becomes just the third player from Eastern Illinois University to be selected in the first round of the First-Year Player Draft, joining Tim Pyznarski (15th overall in 1981 by the Oakland Athletics) and Stan Royer (16th overall in 1988, also by Oakland).

Entering the 2021 draft, the 21-year-old was ranked as the No. 55 overall draft prospect by Baseball America and the No. 55 prospect by MLB Pipeline.

During the summer of 2020, Sweeney finished second in the Coastal Plain League batting race, hitting .397/.481/.676 (27-for-68) with 19R, 7 doubles, 4HR, 16RBI, 11BB and 3SB with the Wilson Tobs.

Sweeney also attended St. Xavier High School in Louisville, hitting .389 as a senior with 41RBI and 18SB while leading his team to Kentucky State Baseball Championship.

"He has excellent raw power and contact ability, and he can hit to all fields with strong plate discipline. At shortstop, he has a good clock, doesn't play rushed and has good field awareness. His timing for both getting to ground balls and getting the ball across the infield is excellent. We also really like Trey's make-up as he's smart with good instincts. With his overall tool set, we believe he has the potential to be an impact player."

It marks the second time in the last three years that the Yankees selected a shortstop in the first round (also Anthony Volpe from Delbarton H.S., N.J. in 2019) but just their third first-round middle infielder selection since 2011 (also SS Kyle Holder in 2015).

The 2021 draft resumes on Monday, with Rounds 2-10 beginning at 1:00 p.m. ET, with one minute between picks. On Tuesday, the draft concludes with Rounds 11-20 as teams make continuous picks beginning at noon ET. The deadline to sign players selected in the 2021 MLB First-Year Player Draft is Sunday, August 1 at 5:00 p.m. ET.
