MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL, MN – The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have acquired right-handed pitcher Michael Fulmer from the Detroit Tigers, in exchange for minor league right-handed pitcher Sawyer Gipson-Long.

Fulmer, 29, has gone 3-4 with a 3.20 ERA (39.1 IP, 14 ER), two saves, 18 holds, 20 walks, 39 strikeouts, a 1.25 WHIP, a .203 opponent batting average, a .580 opponent OPS and just one home run allowed in 41 games. He has held right-handed batters to a .140 (12-for-86) batting average and left-handed batters to a .298 (17-for-57) batting average. His 18 holds are tied for second-most in the American League and tied for fourth-most in baseball.

The 6-foot-3, 224-pound right-hander has pitched parts of six major league seasons all with the Tigers, going 32-43 with a 3.90 ERA (592.2 IP, 257 ER), 180 walks, 488 strikeouts and 16 saves. The Oklahoma City, Oklahoma native was originally selected by the New York Mets with the 44th overall selection in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft out of Deer Creek High School in Edmond, Oklahoma.

Gipson-Long, 24, split the 2022 season between High-A Cedar Rapids and Double-A Wichita, going 8-6 with a 4.23 ERA (87.1 IP, 41 ER), 19 walks and 87 strikeouts in 18 games (17 starts). He was selected by the Twins in the sixth round of the 2019 First-Year Player Draft out of Mercer University.

To make room for Fulmer on the 40-man roster, the Twins have designated right-handed pitcher Aaron Sanchez for release or assignment.

Fulmer will be in uniform for tonight’s game and wear uniform number 52.
