Tigers Acquire C Thayron Liranzo And INF Trey Sweeney From Los Angeles Dodgers In Exchange For RHP Jack Flaherty
DETROIT – The Detroit Tigers announced that they have acquired catcher Thayron Liranzo and infielder Trey Sweeney from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for righthanded pitcher Jack Flaherty.
Liranzo, 21, has played in 74 games with Single A Midland this season, hitting .220/.344/.356 with 15 doubles, seven homers and 30 RBI. He ranks seventh in the Midwest League with 49 walks. Liranzo represented the Dodgers organization in the Futures Game earlier this season.
Signed by the Dodgers as an international free agent in January, 2021, Liranzo is hitting .247/.371/.465 with 54 doubles, three triples, 40 homers and 139 RBI in 230 career games as a professional. He was named a Low Class A All-Star by Baseball America, All-MiLB Prospect Second Team and a California League Postseason All-Star in 2023 and was an Arizona Complex League Postseason All-Star in 2022. He is ranked No. 3 and No. 8 in the Dodgers prospect rankings on Baseball America and MLB Pipeline, respectively.
Sweeney, 24, has spent the entire 2024 season with Triple A Oklahoma City, playing in 96 games and hitting .254/.334/.427 with 22 doubles, three triples, 13 home runs and 62 RBI. Among all Pacific Coast League players, Sweeney ranks seventh with 22 doubles, tied for seventh with 65 runs scored, ninth with 99 hits and 10th with 62 RBI and 166 total bases. Sweeney was named PCL Player of the Week for the week ending June 2.
Originally selected by the New York Yankees in the first round (30th overall) of the 2021 MLB Draft, Sweeney has played in 339 games over five seasons, slashing .250/.353/.428 with 65 doubles, 13 triples, 49 homers and 181 RBI. He is ranked No. 22 and No. 28 in the Dodgers prospect rankings from MLB Pipeline and Baseball America, respectively.
Flaherty, 28, has started 18 games for the Tigers this season and has a 7-5 record with a 2.95 ERA (106.2IP/35ER) and 133 strikeouts.
