Yankees acquire infielder J.D. Davis

The New York Yankees today announced that they have acquired infielder J.D. Davis and cash considerations from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for infielder Jordan Groshans.

Davis, 31, hit .236 (29-for-123) with 12R, 4 doubles, 4HR, 5RBI, 9BB and 3HP in 39 games with Oakland this season, appearing defensively at first base (24G/17GS) and third base (14G/11GS). Davis signed a Major League contract with the San Francisco Giants on February 7, 2024, before being released on March 11. He was signed by Oakland to a Major League contract on March 16 before being designated for assignment on June 18.

Over parts of eight Major League seasons with the Houston Astros (2017-18), New York Mets (2019-22), San Francisco Giants (2022-23) and Oakland Athletics (2024), Davis has batted .259 (483-for-1,865) with 245R, 92 doubles, 3 triples, 72HR, 220RBI, 207BB, 32HP and 7SB in 634 games. He has appeared defensively in his career at third base (320G/270GS), left field (94G/81GS) and first base (72G/46GS).

Davis spent the 2023 season with San Francisco, hitting .248/.325/.413 (119-for-480) with 61R, 23 doubles, 1 triple, 18HR, 69RBI, 52BB, 6HP and 1SB in 144 games. He recorded career highs in games played, doubles, RBI and walks.

The Elk Grove, Calif., native was originally selected in the fifth round of the 2011 First-Year Player Draft by the Tampa Bay Rays but did not sign. Davis was then selected by Houston in the third round of the 2014 First-Year Player Draft out of Cal State Fullerton. He was acquired by New York-NL along with INF Cody Bohanek from Houston in exchange for OF Ross Adolph, C Scott Manea and INF Luis Santana on January 6, 2019. Davis was acquired by San Francisco along with LHP Thomas Szapucki, RHP Carson Seymour and LHP Nick Zwack from New York-NL in exchange for INF Darin Ruf on August 2, 2022.

To make room on the 40-man roster, the Yankees have transferred RHP Nick Burdi to the 60-day injured list.
