The 18-year-old Winn was 8-2 with a 0.20 ERA and 120 strikeouts in 70 innings at Orange Lutheran High School in Orange, California, earning Gatorade's California High School Player of the Year award. It marked the second straight year for Winn to claim the award, as he was named Gatorade's 2017 Colorado High School Player of the Year at Silver Creek High School near Denver.
Winn pitched for an Orange Lutheran squad that won the USA Baseball National High School Invitational in March. The right-hander pitched the opening game of the tournament for the Lancers, posting nine strikeouts in 6.0 innings, and went 2-for-3 with 3 RBI in the championship game to help Orange Lutheran repeat as NHSI champions.
The 6-foot-2, 195-pound Winn has been rated as the 9th-best prospect (MLB.com) and the 10th-best prospect (Baseball America) in this year's draft. Winn was also tabbed Baseball America's top prospect in Southern California. He has committed to play at Texas Christian University. Winn is also rated by Baseball America as having the second-best control among high school pitching prospects.
In the second round, Texas selected right-handed pitcher Owen White out of Jesse C. Carson High School in China Grove, North Carolina, a suburb of Charlotte. The 6-foot-4, 195-pound White was named 2018 North Carolina Gatorade Player of the Year after finishing this season with a 10-1 record and a 0.22 ERA with 101 strikeouts in 63.2 innings. He also played shortstop and finished his career as the school's all-time leader in hits, runs, RBI, wins, and strikeouts. White also played football and basketball for the Cougars.
White was rated as the 2nd-best high school prospect in North Carolina and 59th-best prospect overall in this year's draft by Baseball America. He has committed to the University of South Carolina.
The draft continues at 12 Noon CT on Tuesday, a day that is scheduled to cover rounds 3 through 10.
