Rangers activate OF Willie Calhoun and INF Brock Holt from 10-day Injured List
LHP Wes Benjamin and INF Anderson Tejeda optioned to Alternate Training Site
Arlington, Texas — The Texas Rangers announced the following roster moves prior to Saturday night’s game against the Baltimore Orioles:
- Outfielder Willie Calhoun activated from 10-day Injured List
- Infielder Brock Holt activated from 10-day Injured List
- Left-handed pitcher Wes Benjamin optioned to Alternate Training Site
- Infielder Anderson Tejeda optioned to Alternate Training Site
Calhoun is scheduled to be the Rangers’ designated hitter for tonight’s game in his first Major League action this season. He was on the 10-day Injured List from March 29-April 16 with a left groin strain suffered during a Spring Training game on March 8 at Chicago-NL. He has been playing in simulated and other camp games in Arizona since late March, and went 0-for-5 in his lone Alternate Site game on Wednesday against the Astros Alternate Site squad in Corpus Christi. Calhoun had been 1-for-11 in 5 games at Spring Training before the groin injury. He played in 28 games for Texas in an injury-shortened 2020 campaign.
Holt has batted .250 with a double and 2 RBI in 4 starts for the Rangers this season. He was on the 10-day Injured List from April 7-16 with a right hamstring strain suffered on an RBI single in the 8th inning on April 6 vs. Toronto. Holt started 4 of the Rangers’ first 5 games, reaching safely in each of those 4 contests, including a hit and 3 walks in the season opener on April 1 at Kansas City. Holt signed with the Rangers on February 12 after splitting the 2020 campaign with Milwaukee and Washington.
Benjamin has gone 0-1 with a 4.76 ERA over 3 relief appearances after making the Rangers’ season-opening roster, taking a blown save in his last outing on Thursday at Tampa Bay (1.1 IP, 0 H, 1 R-ER, 4 BB). Tejeda has gone 1-for-16 in 5 games/starts since he was recalled from the Alternate Training Site on April 9.
Following today’s transactions, the Rangers’ Major League roster remains at the 40-man limit, along with three players on the 60-day Injured List: pitchers Matt Bush, Jonathan Hernandez, and Jose Leclerc.
ALTERNATE SITE ADDITIONS: OF Elier Hernandez and INF Diosbel Arias have both been added to the Rangers' Alternate Training Site. Both Arias and Hernandez have seen action in organized minor league games in Arizona, which began this week.
Hernandez, 26, signed with Texas as a minor league free agent on Dec. 28, 2020. He topped out at Triple-A Omaha in the Kansas City organization in 2019 and batted .317 with 5 home runs and 21 RBI for Vaqueros of the Colombian Professional Baseball League in 2020. Arias, 24, last saw official game action in 2019 with High-A Down East, where he was named a Carolina League All-Star after finishing with the 4th-most hits (131) on the circuit.
