Yankees name Hensley Meulens assistant hitting coach
The New York Yankees today announced that Hensley Meulens has been named an assistant hitting coach.
Meulens (MEW-lens), 54, enters his 12th season on a Major League coaching staff, most recently serving as the bench coach for the New York Mets in 2020. Prior to his stint with the Mets, he spent 11 years with the San Francisco Giants organization, including 10 seasons with the Major League club. Meulens won three World Series championships (2010, ’12, ’14) with San Francisco, serving as the bench coach for two seasons (2018-19) and the hitting coach for eight (2010-17). He was also responsible for the Giants outfield defense instruction, positioning and preparation. Meulens joined the Giants organization in 2009 as the hitting coach for Triple-A Fresno.
Prior to his tenure with the Giants, he spent four seasons in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization as the hitting coach for Triple-A Indianapolis (2005-08). He made his coaching debut with Rookie-level Bluefield in the Baltimore Orioles organization from 2003-04.
The Willemstad, Curacao, native managed Team Netherlands during the 2013 and 2017 World Baseball Classic and served as a coach for them during the 2006 and 2009 WBC. He also coached for Team Netherlands at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens.
Additionally, Meulens ran the Dutch Antilles Baseball Academy from 2003-11 and founded Curacao Baseball Week, which provides free annual clinics and seminars to children and coaches in Curacao with the support of Curacao’s Major League players.
During his playing career, Meulens appeared in 182 Major League games over parts of seven seasons with the Yankees (1989-93), Montreal Expos (1997) and Arizona Diamondbacks (1998), batting .220 (109-for-496) with 67R, 17 doubles, 2 triples, 15HR, 53RBI and 42BB. In addition to his time in the Majors, he also spent time in the Nippon Professional Baseball League (1994-96), Korean Baseball Organization (2000) and Mexican League (2000-02). Meulens also played for Team Netherlands during the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, the 2001 Baseball World Cup in Taichung, Taiwan, and the 2002 Intercontinental Cup in Havana, Cuba.
While playing for the Yankees’ former Triple-A Columbus affiliate, Meulens was named International League MVP in 1990 and was the league leader in home runs in 1992. In 2016, he was inducted into the International League Hall of Fame. He was originally signed by the Yankees as a non-drafted free agent on October 31, 1985.
