Yankees acquire RHP Justin Lange from San Diego

The New York Yankees today announced that they have acquired RHP Justin Lange from the San Diego Padres in exchange for INF Luke Voit.

Lange, 20, was a first-round selection (34th overall – Competitive Balance Round A) of the Padres in the 2020 First-Year Player Draft out of Llano High School in Llano, Tex. He made his professional debut in 2021, making nine starts for the Rookie-level Arizona Complex League (ACL) Padres, going 0-3 with a 6.95 ERA (22.0IP, 18H, 17ER, 15BB, 29K, 1HR).

Prior to the 2020 First-Year Player Draft, the 6’ 4” right-hander was ranked 50th on Baseball America’s Top 500 list and was No. 57 on MLB Pipeline’s list of top draft-eligible prospects. Lange had his senior season cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic and was a 2020 Perfect Game Preseason All-American First-Team selection. Prior to signing with the Padres, he had committed to Dallas Baptist University. In 2019, he earned Perfect Game Honorable Mention and Underclassmen All-American honors.

Voit, 31, has hit .267/.357/.510 (297-for-1,112) with 187R, 47 doubles, 2 triples, 73HR, 203RBI and 133BB in 351 career games over parts of five Major League seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals (2017-18) and the Yankees (2018-21). He hit .239 (51-for-213) with 26R, 7 doubles, 1 triple, 11HR, 35RBI and 21BB in 68 games last season. The 2020 Major League home run leader was acquired by the Yankees from St. Louis along with international signing bonus pool money in exchange for LHP Chasen Shreve and RHP Giovanny Gallegos on July 28, 2018. The Wildwood, Mo., native was originally selected by the Cardinals in the 22nd round of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft out of Missouri State University.

The Yankees’ 40-man roster now stands at 39.
