CHICAGO – The Chicago White Sox have claimed right-handed pitcher Deivi (“DAY-vee”) García off waivers from the New York Yankees and optioned him to Class AAA Charlotte. To make room for García on the 40-man roster, the White Sox transferred right-hander Liam Hendriks to the 60-day injured list.

García, 24, has spent most of the 2023 season at Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, going 3-2 with a 5.67 ERA (29 ER/46.0 IP) and 45 strikeouts over 28 games (one start), before being designated for assignment on Monday. He also made two relief appearances with the Yankees, posting a 1.59 ERA (1 ER/5.2 IP).

García, 5-foot-9 and 185 pounds, has gone 30-40 with a 4.68 ERA (257 ER/494.1 IP) and 634 strikeouts (11.5 per 9.0 IP) in 137 games (93 starts) over seven minor-league seasons in the Yankees system. He also has made 10 appearances (eight starts) over parts of three seasons (2020-21, ’23) with the Yankees, going 3-4 with a 4.84 ERA (26 ER/48.1 IP) and 48 strikeouts.

García made his MLB debut in game two of a doubleheader on August 30, 2020 vs. the Mets, allowing one unearned run on four hits with no walks and six strikeouts over 6.0 IP. At age 21 years and 103 days at the time of his debut, was the second-youngest player to start a game in the majors in 2020 behind only San Diego’s Luis Patiño (20 years, 329 days on September 19). Patiño was acquired by the White Sox from Tampa Bay on August 1, 2023.

García originally was signed by the Yankees as a non-drafted free agent on July 2, 2015. He was tabbed by MLB.com as the No. 3 prospect in the Yankees organization following the 2019 season.

Hendriks, 34, was placed on the 15-day injured list on June 11 (retroactive to June 10) with right elbow inflammation and underwent successful Tommy John surgery on August 2.
