White Sox and Josh Harrison agree to terms on one-year contract with club option for 2023
GLENDALE, Ariz. – The Chicago White Sox and two-time All-Star infielder Josh Harrison have agreed to terms on a one-year, $5.5-million contract, which includes a club option for the 2023 season.
Under terms of the agreement, Harrison will receive $4 million in 2022, with the White Sox holding a $5.5-million option for 2023 with a $1.5-million buyout.
Harrison, 34, batted .279/.341/.400 (141-505) with 33 doubles, eight home runs, a career-high 60 RBI and 58 runs scored in 138 games with Washington and Oakland in 2021. He began the season with the Nationals, where he appeared in 90 games before being traded to the A’s on July 30 with catcher Yan Gomes and cash considerations in exchange for three minor-leaguers.
Harrison, 5-foot-8 and 190 pounds, started games at six different positions between the two stops, including 91 at second base, 15 at third, 15 in left field, seven at shortstop, two in center and one in right. He also started at every spot in the batting order except ninth.
Harrison is a career .274/.318/.401 (960-3,508) with 196 doubles, 30 triples, 64 RBI and 442 runs scored in 1,049 games over 11 major-league seasons with Pittsburgh (2011-18), Detroit (2019), Washington (2020-21) and Oakland (2021). He was a National League All-Star with the Pirates in 2014 and 2017.
Harrison originally was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the sixth round of the 2008 draft out of the University of Cincinnati. He was traded to the Pirates on July 30, 2009 with pitchers José Ascanio and Kevin Hart in exchange for pitchers Tom Gorzelanny and John Grabow.
With the move, the White Sox 40-man roster increases to 40.
