White Sox and Joe Kelly agree to terms on two-year contract with club option for 2024
GLENDALE, Ariz. – The Chicago White Sox and right-handed reliever Joe Kelly have agreed to terms on a two-year, $17-million contract, which includes a club option for the 2024 season.
Under terms of the agreement, Kelly will receive $7 million in 2022 and $9 million in 2023, with the White Sox holding a $9.5-million option for 2024 with a $1-million buyout.
Kelly, 33, went 2-0 with a 2.86 ERA (14 ER/44.0 IP), 10 holds, two saves, 50 strikeouts, a .174 (28-161) opponents average and 0.98 WHIP over 48 relief appearances last season with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He limited right-handers to a .167/.257/.278 (15-90) slash line.
Kelly posted a 1.59 ERA (6 ER/34.0 IP) with 40 strikeouts over his final 37 outings, including a 0.00 ERA (11.1 IP) with three hits allowed in September. His fastball averaged 97.7 mph, which tied for ninth-highest among MLB pitchers with at least 40.0 IP.
Kelly has gone 50-29 with a 3.83 ERA (311 ER/730.2 IP) and 619 strikeouts in 365 games (80 starts) over 10 seasons in the major leagues with St. Louis (2012-14), Boston (2014-18) and the Dodgers (2019-21). In 285 career relief appearances, he is 19-10 with a 3.35 ERA (111 ER/298.1 IP), 59 holds, 310 strikeouts and a .226 (252-1,115) opponents average.
Kelly has pitched in 40 career postseason games (five starts), going 4-3 with a 3.55 ERA (23 ER/58.1 IP) and 53 strikeouts. He won World Series championships with the Red Sox in 2018 and Dodgers in 2020.
Kelly, a native of Anaheim, Calif., originally was selected by the Cardinals in the third round of the 2009 draft out of Cal-Riverside.
With the move, the White Sox 40-man roster increases to 38.
