Tyler Naquin, Luke Voit named Players of the Week presented by Chevrolet
DJ Peters turns impressive double play to claim Play of the Week
Outfielder Tyler Naquin of the Cincinnati Reds has been chosen the National League Player of the Week presented by Chevrolet, and first baseman Luke Voit of the New York Yankees has been named the American League Player of the Week presented by Chevrolet. The announcements were made earlier today on MLB Network.
Naquin earned his first career NL Player of the Week Award and is Cincinnati’s third player to win this season, joining his teammates Wade Miley (May 10th) and Joey Votto (August 2nd). Voit claimed his third career AL Player of the Week Award, most recently winning in April 2019, and is the Yankees’ third different winner in 2021 (fourth time), following All-Star Aaron Judge (May 17th) and Corey Kluber (May 3rd and May 24th).

- Batted .500 (13-for-26) with nine runs scored, three doubles, a triple, four home runs, five RBI, three walks and a 1.154 slugging percentage over seven games played.
- Batted a perfect 3-for-3 with three doubles and three runs scored in Saturday’s win over the Miami Marlins. Marked only the 15th such performance in franchise history and the first since Orlando Cabrera in September 2010.
- Delivered his second multi-homer game of the season in yesterday’s victory (also April 6th). His 18 round-trippers on the season represent a personal best.
- Enters play today in the midst of a 12-game hitting streak dating back to August 11th, including eight multi-hit efforts. Has logged 11 extra-base hits during his torrid stretch for the Postseason-contending Reds.
- Hit .476 (10-for-21) with five runs scored, three doubles, two home runs, 11 RBI and a .905 slugging percentage across six outings.
- Logged four hits, a double, one home run and four RBI in New York’s win over the Minnesota Twins on Friday. Became the fourth Yankees first baseman to tally at least four hits and four RBI in a game since 2011, joining DJ LeMahieu (2019), Lyle Overbay (2013) and Mark Teixeira (2012).
- Enters tonight’s contest on a seven-game hitting streak dating back to August 15th. Has tallied 13 RBI during the productive stretch, and has plated at least one run in each of his last five outings.
- Led in part by Voit’s hot stretch at the plate, the Yankees are on a nine-game winning streak and now sit just 4.5 games behind the AL East-leading Tampa Bay Rays.
Other noteworthy NL performances for the week included All-Star first baseman Freddie Freeman (.462, 7 R, 12 H, 6 XBH) of the Atlanta Braves; starting pitcher Adam Wainwright (1-1, 1.29 ERA, 14.0 IP, 13 SO) of the St. Louis Cardinals; first baseman C.J. Cron (.429, 3 2B, 2 HR, 8 RBI) of the Colorado Rockies; first baseman Pete Alonso (.333, 7 R, 3 HR, 8 RBI) of the New York Mets; All-Star relief pitcher Josh Hader (4 G, 1-0, 0.00 ERA, 3 SV) of the Milwaukee Brewers; and Naquin’s All-Star teammate Nick Castellanos (.370, 6 R, 10 H, 7 RBI).
Other noteworthy AL performances last week included shortstop Amed Rosario (.481, 7 R, 13 H, 5 XBH) of the Cleveland Indians; shortstop Nicky Lopez (.440, 6 R, 11 H, 8 SB) and outfielder Andrew Benintendi (.444, 8 R, 12 H, 5 XBH) of the Kansas City Royals; second baseman Brandon Lowe (.346, 9 R, 7 XBH, 9 RBI) of the Rays; infielder Ty France (.417, 6 R, 3 HR, 7 RBI) of the Seattle Mariners; All-Star second baseman Jose Altuve (.412, 5 R, 14 H, 4 2B) of the Houston Astros; and Voit’s All-Star teammate Gerrit Cole (2-0, 0.77 ERA, 15 SO, 2 BB).

Double Play Initiated by DJ Peters of the Texas Rangers

Outfielder DJ Peters of the Texas Rangers earned his first career Play of the Week Award and is the Rangers’ first winner since Delino DeShields in August 2019. In the bottom of the third inning against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park on Saturday, Peters made a leaping catch against the centerfield wall before firing a throw to first base for the double play. Additional Play of the Week candidates included Derek Hill’s diving catch in left-center field; Adolis García's home run-robbing catch in extra innings; Lars Nootbaar’s leaping grab at the wall; and Andrew Benintendi’s throw home for the final out of a Royals victory.

A Texas A&M nursing Grad and 11-year hospital veteran, Roe Kilatchko has spent the last year working in the Houston Covid-19 ICU. Since March 2020, she has been pulling 18-hour shifts while doing her best to stay healthy so she can continue to help on the front lines of the pandemic. Roe has seen more than she will ever talk about while in the ICU but has never lost her joy for life.
Mitch Beller from Kansas City, MO
As a social worker at Children’s Mercy, Mitch Beller spends his days helping families in the community. Through the pandemic, he continued to help by providing resources to families, educating kids about the importance of mental health, and helping parents execute virtual school plans (in addition to supporting his own family through tumultuous times, including the unexpected death of his mother-in-law). Mitch is a true MVP in everything he does.
