Twins select contract of Diego Castillo

Kody Funderburk optioned to Triple-A St. Paul; Justin Topa transferred to 60-day IL

MINNEAPOLIS-ST. PAUL, MN – The Minnesota Twins announced that they have selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Diego Castillo from Triple-A St. Paul.

Castillo, 30, has made 18 appearances for the Saints, posting a 2.50 ERA (18.0 IP, 5 ER) with five saves, six walks, 22 strikeouts and a .194 opponent batting average. The 6-foot-3, 268-pound right-hander signed a minor league contract with the Twins in late March. A native of Cabrera, Dominican Republic, Castillo has pitched in parts of six major league seasons with the Tampa Bay Rays (2018-21) and Seattle Mariners (2021-23), going 24-18 with a 3.22 ERA (268.1 IP, 96 ER), 35 saves (46 opportunities), 101 walks, 304 strikeouts and a .200 opponent batting average in 258 games (17 starts). Castillo will wear uniform number 62.

Castillo takes the 26-man roster spot vacated by left-handed pitcher Kody Funderburk, who was optioned to St. Paul. Funderburk appeared in 19 games for the Twins this season, going 1-0 with a 5.18 ERA (24.1 IP, 14 ER), 12 walks, 23 strikeouts and a .295 opponent batting average.

To make room on the 40-man roster, the Twins have transferred right-handed pitcher Justin Topa (left patellar tendinitis) to the 60-day Injured List.
